The 4 “S” Words You Want To Be Doing This Year

It’s the New Year and with good intentions we all set our minds on different aspects of our lives to improve upon. The most common resolutions include health and fitness, organization, saving money, traveling, etc. These are all great resolutions and I’ve pulled my own resolutions from each of these categories as well. However, I do have another resolution category that I will be focused on for 2019…

Relationships. I want to work on one relationship in particular as I believe every relationship stems from building a solid foundation with one; my relationship with God.

I made great strides in 2018 developing my relationship with the Lord. I had consistent quiet times, prayer time and enjoyed a women’s bible study group. However, there is always room for improvement. Every relationship can get closer and stronger, right?!

I can feel the Lord tugging at my heart. I know there is a part of my spiritual walk that needs more cultivating and I’m so excited about it! I know He has more for me in 2019! And I know He has more for YOU, too!

A few weeks ago, I had a sermon really resonate with me. The pastor was preaching from Colossians 3:1-17. To give a little background, Colossians is written by the disciple Paul during his Roman imprisonment. Paul is writing to the young church of Colosse. During this time, Colosse is dealing with some false teachers so Paul is writing to dispute the heresy.

Paul is giving us a blueprint for how a believer’s life should look.

Not saying we will always look this way… but we can’t stop trying to be better. Through these verses, there are 4 key components that everyone can put into practice to draw nearer to the Lord. It’s simple in application (to a degree) yet powerful in the transformation it will bring!

And with that said…let’s make 2019 the year of the 4s: Set, Slay, Surrender & Serve.

SET – your mind on things above.

“Set” in this context means “to seek.” Look at life from Christ’s perspective. Search for Him daily! Be sure to get your [amazon_textlink asin=’0310357799′ text=’quiet time‘ template=’ProductLink’ store=’poms2moms-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’c3732f05-0f8a-11e9-b9aa-a512fa535ef9′] in each day.

Seek God each morning and ask Him to direct your steps for the day. Try memorizing some verses to help shift your focus on Him. I love making sticky notes and putting them on my bathroom mirror!

  • Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Phil. 4:8
  • Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2

SLAY – the sin in your life.

This can be easier said than done! Remember in these verses Paul is speaking to believers. Chances are what people typically think of as “big sins” may not be happening in your life… but how’s your temper? Do you speak the truth? Obscene Speech? Slander? If I’m being honest…some of those make me say, “Ouch!”

SURRENDER – to the word of God

If you are a believer, there should be an outward difference in your life. If you take a look at verses 12-14, it shows what qualities, as believers, we should display. Above all of these, we should show love. Surrender to God’s word and love people just as Jesus did!

SERVE – others

Our sinful nature can really take away from serving others. We tend to justify why we shouldn’t serve another person but this verse encourages us that whatever we do or whomever we are serving, we are doing it for the Lord.

  • Verse 17: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

I hope these words resonate with you, too, and are what you need to grow your spiritual walk with Christ. The Lord makes it easy to come to Him, but it’s a choice that we have to make daily. Some of the most exciting times in my life have happened when I’ve been my closest to Him.

    I love your focus words and Bible verses! It’s so important to have that primary relationship with God in place, as it affects all other relationships. My focus is to declutter and simplify, in all areas of life, including thought processes and spiritual environment. My focus verse for this year is Proverbs 16:3–Commit your works to the Lord so your thoughts can be established.

    I aim to surrender more to the word of God. I want to move beyond approximations to exactly following what it says.
